UK Election – With historically low voter turnout, the center-left Labour Party had a landslide victory over the Conservative party in parliamentary elections.  As a result, Keir Starmer, will become the new prime minister of Britain.  While polling prior to the election had shown the Conservative party trailing, they underperformed even more so and won the fewest seats since their founding in 1834.

French Election – The leftist coalition, the New Popular Front, surpassed Marine Le Pen’s anti-immigrant party, National Rally, in parliamentary elections in France over the weekend.  Of the 577 seats up for election, the New Popular Front won 182 seats.  President Macron’s pro-business party, the National Assembly and its allies won 163 seats and National Rally won 143 seats.  The result was a surprise compared to polling data that showed National Rally projected to win.

Bastille Day  – France celebrates the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, which took place on July 14, 1789.  The Bastille was a military fortress that housed prisoners and weapons.  French revolutionaries took control in 1789, which ultimately led to French independence ten years later.  The key to the Bastille is on display at the home of George Washington in Mount Vernon, Virginia after Washington’s friend, Marquis de Lafayette, sent it to him in 1790.
